Orienteering: the key to unlocking physical activity across the whole curriculum?

Sponsored: Enrich Education outline the physical and mental benefits of orienteering

Enrich Education recently attended their first Schools & Academies Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Enrich Education is the largest provider of school orienteering courses in the UK and this was the first national event Enrich has attended since launching the School Orienteering and Outdoor Learning Hub.

This is a remote, interactive platform with over 200 cross-curricular activity plans and supporting resources, including maths, English, science, phonics, geography and OAA. It supports schools to deliver 60 active minutes a day, contributes to an active recovery curriculum and is ideal for sustainable use of sports premium funding.

Enrich Education spoke to many schools and MATs over the two-day event and came away with over 50 follow up meetings and demos booked in.

What is orienteering?

Orienteering combines physical activity, map reading and problem solving. Participants use a map to navigate between a series of control points. There are a great many alternative routes that can be followed, even on a simple orienteering map with a relatively small number of control points.

Where can you do orienteering?

Although orienteering is often associated with the great outdoors, the school and its surrounding grounds are an excellent place to introduce orienteering. Enrich Education provide all the infrastructure – high-quality orienteering markers, bespoke maps of the school site, advice and guidance, comprehensive staff training – to enable schools to establish orienteering as an essential and sustainable part of school life.

Why introduce orienteering to your school?

Orienteering is a great way to get children active and outdoors, benefiting both their physical and mental wellbeing. In addition to the physical challenge, children develop map reading skills, such as directional language and interpreting symbols and keys. Orienteering involves a significant element of problem solving and also helps children to develop communication and teamwork skills.

Orienteering across the curriculum

As well as a fantastic way to enhance a school’s PE and games offer, orienteering provides great opportunities to enhance learning across the whole curriculum. Enrich Education’s Orienteering and Outdoor Learning Hub gives schools access to over 200 learning activities, directly linked to the maths, English, phonics, science, geography and PE/games (OAA) national curriculum.

Easy to follow activity plans and resources provide teachers with everything they need to use their school’s orienteering maps and markers to deliver fun, active and imaginative learning activities across the whole curriculum. The unique letter and number combinations on the 15 Enrich orienteering markers ensure that there is limitless capacity for using a school’s orienteering infrastructure in cross-curricular learning.

The 10 phonics and number control markers provide additional opportunities to embed active learning into maths and English at EYFS/KS1. Finally, schools can use the set of 10 interactive markers to create bespoke courses and activities and their QR code technology offers learning opportunities linked to events and celebrations eg World Book Day.

Getting started with orienteering

Enrich Education’s cartography team works with the school to create a range of professional and high-quality maps, specific to the school’s grounds. The process starts with a remote “walk around” of the site to identify the best locations for control markers and any special requirements and features the school would like to be included or excluded. This short meeting provides everything needed to create a set of high-quality, bespoke digital maps.

Schools can access all their bespoke maps via the secure account page on the Enrich School Orienteering and Outdoor Learning Hub. All markers are made from high-quality aluminium composite panels, ensuring that they are exceptionally hard wearing and sustainable. Enrich Education’s comprehensive training package, which schools can access online, or have delivered on-site, is endorsed by 1st4sport.

This CPD provides all staff with the confidence and knowledge to ensure that orienteering can be fully utilised throughout the school and across the whole curriculum.
