Ipswich school offers ‘life-changing’ scholarship

The Royal Hospital School is offering a scholarship to year 11 students in the Essex and Suffolk areas

The Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Holbrook, Ipswich is offering a scholarship to year 11 students in Essex and Suffolk who have a keen passion for maths and intend to study the subject at A-level and university.

The independent boarding and day school is located in 200-acres of countryside in Suffolk. The school has a strong maritime history and conducts daily traditions to honour this, including the raising and lowering of its ensign and wearing of Royal Navy uniforms.

The De Neumann Mathematics Scholarship gives students in their last year of school the opportunity to receive a full scholarship at RHS’s sixth form. To be eligible for the scholarship students must attend a school in either Essex or Suffolk, have a strong interest in maths and have high predicted grades in the subject as well as strong references.

Chris Graham, head of sixth form at The Royal Hospital School said: “This scholarship is a life-changing opportunity to attend the sixth form at the Royal Hospital School on a 100% scholarship. Our current De Neumann scholar is sitting his A-levels this year with the aspiration to study aeronautical engineering at Imperial College London.”

The scholarship is named after Professor Bernard de Neumann, an alumnus of the school and British mathematician, inventor and naval historian. Passionate about maintaining the relevance of the subject at the school, Neumann’s estate has funded the scholarship which will take on a new student every two years.

The school’s current De Neumann Scholar, Owen, said: “The De Neumann Scholarship has provided me with many opportunities, particularly growing my passion for maths, physics and chemistry, leading me to apply for aeronautical engineering courses at university. But it’s more than just the academics, I have had new experiences that I wouldn’t get anywhere else, especially on the sports field.”
