Twelve-year-old wins snowboarding gold

A pupil at Shrewsbury High Prep School has won a clutch of medals at the recent British Ski and Snowboarding Championships

Shrewsbury High Prep School pupil Gabriel Adams returned from the annual British Ski and Snowboarding Championships in Tignes in France with a gold in the junior men’s snowboardcross, a silver in the junior men’s slopestyle and gold in the junior men’s halfpipe.

The 12-year-old’s passion for snowboarding began when he and his family were living in Morzine in France where he was snowboarding in the adult park and going off jumps from the age of eight. He was spotted by Team GB junior coach Steve Addicott and has been training with him for the past three years. Steve said: “Gabriel shows true potential in freestyle snowboarding. He has the passion, motivation and the natural ability to excel at a high international level. With coaching and added riding experience, he is advancing along the performance pathway towards Olympic qualification.”

Gabriel is back at Shrewsbury High Prep for the summer term after spending the spring term training with Steve in Pila in Italy. His parents Joe and Lizzie said: “He is so driven by what he is doing and they train like professional athletes so it is pretty hard work and very intense training as well as having to fit in his school work.”
