Polwhele’s new Headmaster to teach the value of caring

‘I believe that a major part of my role is in educating the children how to become cultured and courteous members of society,’ says Chris Curl

Polwhele House welcomed a new Headmaster this September, Chris Curl, who has already led three prep schools during his career.

Polwhele House is a co-educational school for children from the age of three to 13, set in 32 acres of countryside and woodlands just outside of Truro.

Chris says: “The school is truly fortunate to have such a wonderful natural environment for the children to spend their precious school days – as well as such a rich source of opportunities for learning outdoors, which most other schools can only dream of.

“We are passionate about making Polwhele the very best it can be for our children who only have their childhood once; we have the opportunity of giving them a fantastic start – providing them with enjoyable and profitable experiences both inside and outside the classroom with high standards in all areas.”

“The school is truly fortunate to have such a wonderful natural environment for the children to spend their precious school days.”

Both Chris and his wife Emma were educated in independent prep and senior schools, and went to the University at Exeter and Homerton College respectively. After qualifying they went on to teach in co-educational prep and senior schools including The King’s School Canterbury, Forest School and Haileybury. Emma will also be teaching at Polwhele and hopes to use her skills and experience for the benefit of all to promote and improve the school.

Chris is keen to teach children important values, as he explains: “I believe that a major part of my role is in educating the children how to become cultured and courteous members of society – which goes very much against the tide. However, by working in partnership with parents and focusing on key values such as ‘respect’ and ‘caring’, it can be done very successfully – particularly so in a small school with small classes.”

Polwhele also now offers performing arts and equestrian scholarships, and is keen to show prospective parents and pupils around the site.
