The Newcastle High School for Girls has announced that Michael Tippett is to become the first male Head in its history.
Currently holding the position of senior deputy head at the school, Michael will move into his new role in the next academic year, taking charge of the largest independent girls’ school in the region which educates 780 pupils aged 3–18.
NHSG opened in 2014, following the merger of two leading girls’ schools, Central Newcastle High School and Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School. It is one of 25 schools within the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), a unique family of schools, united in its aims and aspirations and with a ‘girls-first’ approach to education.
The GDST announcement of Michael’s appointment has been warmly welcomed by parents, pupils and staff as well as the wider NHSG community.
Commenting on his appointment, Michael said, “Newcastle High is an outstanding school for girls and it is a real honour to have been appointed as Head from September. NHSG is all about nurturing every individual girl to achieve her full potential, both academically and in the experiences we encourage her to have beyond her studies. One of the strengths of the school is that we support all pupils to develop their own identity and personality in an environment which actively demonstrates that they are valued for being themselves. I am thrilled at the prospect of leading the school community as we continue to realise our vision.”
