Inspiring futures at UK Construction Week

Nathan Garnett, event director of UK Construction Week, talks about how the construction industry’s biggest event can inspire pupils

The Government’s newly announced construction sector deal will be the biggest investment in construction for at least a decade. But key to its success will be transforming the construction sector’s image for the younger generation, inspiring and educating a new wave of construction professionals who can pioneer and revolutionise the industry. 

That is why the ‘Future of Construction’ is the focal theme of this year’s UK Construction Week (UKCW), where we will be pioneering role models, debating top issues and exhibiting the latest products. Education construction professionals have a very important role to play in inspiring young minds through the school buildings themselves, making this a not-to-be-missed event. 

Top-of-the-class exhibitors 

Staying on top of the latest thinking, products and education-specific solutions is important for the education construction industry. Solutions such as Rockwool’s dB acoustic range that provides room-to-room sound insulation, reducing noise transfer and maximising concentration; Soyang’s printable flooring that transforms playgrounds and walkways; and Risco’s powerful security systems with virtually unlimited scalability. 

More than 650 exhibitors from across the global construction industry will join together at the nine UKCW shows, to showcase more than 10,000 innovative products, including International Decorative Surfaces’ new panelling system; virtual reality from Fischer Fixings UK; Trumpf’s higher-performing cordless power tools; and Kedel’s low-carbon construction accessories. We have sourced exhibitors that education construction professionals will benefit from meeting including Bruag, Canon, Concrete Centre, Containex, Easy Trim Rooning and Construction, Forticrete, G&B North West, OM Group, Soyang, SPSenvirowall, Eon Energy, KORE and Hanson Plywood. 

Inspiring impressionable young minds

The ‘Future of Construction’ theme will bring construction professionals in touch with state-of-the-art products that will inspire young minds, via the Innovation Trail. Companies taking part include Addex Group, Quinn Building Products, Rawlplug, Rockwool, Soudal, Styrene Packaging & Insulation and Velux. 

Professional development 

I’m not alone in thinking that housing should be one of the top issues on the Government’s task list, especially given the mounting issues facing industry professionals themselves. Issues such as combining modern techniques with older buildings, energy efficiency with fire safety, and building technology with security. 

Expert speakers will discuss, debate and tackle these issues live on the UKCW Stage through a stimulating seminar programme. Ticketholders can already book onto seminars covering the digital future of construction; disrupting the industry delivery models; and the top innovations in construction. 

An unmissable keynote speaker will also be taking to the UKCW Stage. Barbara Res, the project manager behind Trump Tower, will discuss her experience and challenge of rising to the top of a male- dominated construction business in the ’70s and ’80s and working with Donald Trump.

If that wasn’t enough, attendees can also top-up their knowledge through an extensive, free CPD programme delivered by leading industry organisations. 

Beyond the classroom 

What makes UKCW so unique for me, is the bringing together of nine sector-specific shows to understand the specific issues, advancements and products across the whole of the construction sector: Building Tech Live, Timber Expo, Civils Expo, Energy 2018, Surface and Materials Show, Plant & Machinery Live, HVAC 2018, Build Show, as well as Grand Designs Live. 

Other personal highlights that I think others will share include the O site Theatre supported by MPBA; the Timber Focus Theatre supported by TRADA; GOOEE Theatre showcasing its award- winning Internet of Things ecosystem; the rst BMF Young Merchants’ Conference at the BMF Pavilion; and the Role Models initiative winner. Last year was our most successful yet with over 30,000 trade visitors and this year is set to be even bigger, with an anticipated 35,000 stakeholders attending.
