Lucy, a local girl, started her club hockey career at Horsham Hockey Club where a number of Farlington girls play in the junior sides before working their way into the senior sides.
Lucy was 20 years old when she was selected to play for England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year. She did not have an easy ride to reach the squad: a ruptured anterior ligament forced her off the pitch in November 2012. After recovering from that injury, she broke her hand during her first match, setting her back once again.
But Lucy remained determined. ‘There were some very, very low points,’ she recalled. ‘I remember the day I had my surgery. I was in so much pain and crying my eyes out, but I just knew I could get through this if I worked really hard. My surgeon advised me that I was going to be out for a year, so it was an excellent chance to become the fittest I’ve ever been.”
Months of intense gym training and discipline followed. Although she could not get on the pitch and play, Lucy made sure that whatever exercise she could do, she did. A frustrating period in her life was turned around by her optimistic approach.
Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games, said: “It was great to have such an inspirational role model in school leading a session. Lucy was excellent with the girls and re-enforced what they had been previously told. The girls were very receptive to Lucy’s coaching and inspirational story, and worked very hard throughout the session to impress her.”
