Farlington student awarded SportsAid funding

16-year-old Gabriella Eltham will be following in the footsteps of her heroes Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill

Farlington Sports Scholar Gabriella Eltham has been awarded SportsAid support to help her in her quest to become a medal winner.

Gabriella, 16, who is part of the GB Modern Pentathlon Talent programme, was encouraged to create a CV and write a list of reasons why SportsAid would be valuable to her. Having completed this, GB Modern Pentathlon selected her for nomination as a worthy potential recipient for an award. From the many submitted applications, Prudential plc, through their Outreach programme, chose to support her.

SportsAid is a national charity dedicated to helping talented athletes achieve their ambitions. All the money distributed is through donations. It helps young, unfunded athletes to overcome one of their greatest barriers to success – the financial challenge of trying to become Britain’s next generation of Olympians, Paralympians and world champions. Previous recipients have included Sir Chris Hoy, David Weir, Dame Sarah Storey, Ellie Simmonds, Sir Bradley Wiggins, and two of Gaby’s favourites: Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Gabriella is training to compete in the modern pentathlon which comprises five diverse sports: swimming, fencing, riding, running and laser target shooting. Each discipline is held separately, apart from the running and shooting, which are held together in a challenging combined event.

Gabriella is a fantastic athlete with a great attitude and lots of potential. To be selected to receive this funding is testament to all Gaby’s hard work and training – Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington School

Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington School, said, “Gabriella is a fantastic athlete with a great attitude and lots of potential. To be selected to receive this funding is testament to all Gaby’s hard work and training.

“We are very proud of her at Farlington. As a Sports and Academic Scholar, she is a great role model to the other students. I’m sure she will make the most of this opportunity.”
