This February, Louisa Knowles, a Year 9pupil at Howell’s School, Llandaff, GDST, is off on the trip of a lifetime. She has been selected to go on tour to Johannesburg and Cape Town for two and a half weeks with the Welsh Under 15 and Under 17girls’ cricket development squad. Louisa becameinterested in cricketwhen Welsh cricket coaches visited local primary schools in Cardiff and the Vale in 2007. Thedevelopment of the new Swalec stadium in Sophia Gardens led to a new fundbeing created to encourage girls’ cricket in Wales.

Louisa said: “I started training with the Glamorgan Girls’ Academy, played for Cardiff and the Vale, and a few months later joined Cowbridge Cricket Club. I have made some great friends in cricket and that is one of the many reasons I enjoy the sport.I was selected to play for Wales in the summer of 2011 and awarded my Welsh cap this autumn.I have attended three Malvern Cricket festivals, where the Welsh teams and development squads play against teams from all over the UK and Ireland. I am very excited about the visit to South Africa, which will be a great and memorable experience for me! ”
