To mark the end of the International Year of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Chemistry ‘Flash Bang’ show came to Cheadle Hulme School.
Year 10 and 11 pupils at the School enjoyed a spectacular display of the sights and sounds created by different liquids and gasses in a very entertaining presentation by Dr Sarah Heath, from the University of Manchester’s School of Chemistry.
Producing loud bangs and bright flashes with magical results, Dr Heath, a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, explained to pupils how the effects were created and applied in various settings, such as in film special effects and various industries.
The lecture proved both educational and inspiring, and the GCSE students were excited by the prospect of trying out some of the safer tricks at home, including the volcanic effects which can be created by a packet of mints.
“Pupils were captivated and inspired by the show, which was truly dazzling!” says Mr Ian Chippendale, Head of Chemistry at the School. “This was a great chance to illustrate to pupils the fun which can be had in the study of science, whilst discovering some fascinating uses in various chemical reactions”.
