15th November 2011

In an exciting new development for Farnborough Hill, the first broadcast of F'Hill Radio went on air at lunchtime on Wednesday 2 November. The event was covered by Eagle Radio in their news slots that evening with clips from the show and an interview with Director of Drama, Davina Robinson who is leading this initiative. Produced by the Sixth Form Radio Team, using professional equipment, the show was available in classrooms and other public places around the school and is set to become a weekly event. The show included interviews, comedy, competitions and music and lived up to its motto of 'Entertaining the Whole Person', a parody of our school mission to ‘Educate the Whole person’.
As preparation, students joined Eagle Radio on an outside broadcast in the Summer Term. Then, during October half term, eight Sixth Form students attended a two day 'Radio Rocks' training session at Eagle Radio. Katharine Whittingham says of her experience on the outside broadcast, ‘It was nerve wracking initially, but actually easier than I expected. Once I got into presenting, it flowed.’ She’s obviously a ‘natural’ and is now one of our full time radio crew!
The radio is one of the extensive enrichment activities on offer at Farnborough Hill’s ‘sixth form on the hill’. Girls will spend Friday afternoons producing the programme and go on air every Wednesday lunchtime. Farnborough Hill’s impressive radio studio has professional, state-of-the-art equipment and the girls have expert technical assistance from our talented AV/IT technician Mike Mellor.
Although the show is produced by the Sixth Form, the whole school is invited to submit ideas and requests to feature in future broadcasts. Davina Robinson said ’This is a wonderful opportunity for our students. The atmosphere before we broadcast is always electric but the results are amazing. The whole school is buzzing about it and singing the F’Hill Radio jingle!’
