4th November 2011

Bedford Modern School’s U16 Ski Team comprising Simon Whitaker, Dan Barton, Rob Vanbeck and Samuel O’Meara competed in the English Schools National Finals at Stoke ski centre on Saturday 8th October.
Most of the U16 Ski Team are in Year 8 and 9 and so were pitched against considerably older competitors. However, each team member completed the required number of runs and the combined times were: Daniel Barton 28.03; Rob Vanbeck 29.51; Simon Whitaker 31.73 and Sam O’Meara 36.53.
This resulted in the Bedford Modern School boys team finishing 5th overall in the English Finals - a superb effort especially as they have two more years left in this age group.
Bedford Modern School’s Open Age Ski Team for the English Schools Ski Association (ESSKIA) 2011 event consisted of Daniel Barton, Jamie Hunter, Joe Gee and Rob Vanbeck.
The four boys were the four fastest BMS boys in the qualifiers and their times were then quick enough to be selected for the National Finals. The Open Final is really the pinnacle of the ESSKIA race calendar with competitors aged up to 19 years of age.
Combined times for both runs were Daniel Barton 30.80; Rob Vanbeck 31.99; Joe Gee 32.22 and Jamie Hunter 32.40.
The team result means that the BMS Open Ski Team came 10th in the country and has now qualified for the British Schools Ski Championships 2011in Edinburgh, Scotland later in November.
Nigel Robinson, Ski Co-ordinator at Bedford Modern School said: “These results are most encouraging. Earlier this year the Ski Team were named BMS Sports Team of the Year and the achievements in the recent English Schools events proves that the boys are determined to try and retain their well deserved title.”
